Walk through our pastures on a summer afternoon and you might see something that feels pretty ordinary to us—but probably isn't something you see at the grocery store.

At Grateful Grazers, calves stay with their mothers as they grow and graze together.

Our calves stay with their mothers. They aren't separated at birth and raised somewhere else. They grow up together, following their mothers through the pasture, learning to graze and simply being calves.

And sometimes, you'll see our kids out there with them, too.

Our children are often right there in the pasture with the cattle.

They walk through the pasture, check on the animals, and spend time among the cattle.

Our cattle are happy, contented, friendly

animals. We've found that when animals are treated respectfully and handled calmly, they tend to be calm themselves.

There's something special about watching a child walk through a pasture full of cattle and seeing the animals remain relaxed around them.

It's part of what we love about farm life.

Fresh Grass, Fresh Water, Room to Graze

During the grazing season, we move our cattle to fresh grass throughout the pasture.

Fresh grass, room to graze, and a quiet day on the farm.

We don't simply turn the cattle loose and leave them in one place all season.

We move them from paddock to paddock as the grazing season progresses, giving them access to fresh grass throughout the pasture.

Their waterers are always just a short walk from wherever they're grazing, so fresh water is readily available.

And then they settle in.

They graze.

They wander.

The calves follow their mothers.

The herd moves slowly across the pasture.

There's no hurry.

No need to force them from one place to another.

Just cattle doing what cattle do.

Before it's Beef, it's an Animal

It's easy to forget that the package of beef in your freezer started with a living animal.

At Grateful Grazers, we don't want to lose sight of that.

Raising beef comes with a responsibility. We have the privilege of caring for these animals for a portion of their lives, and we believe they deserve to be treated with respect.

That means keeping calves with their mothers, giving cattle access to pasture, providing water nearby, moving them to fresh grass, and handling them calmly and respectfully.

It also means teaching our children that food doesn't magically appear on a grocery store shelf.

They see the work.

They see the animals.

They see the calves nursing beside their mothers.

They see the cattle moving through the pasture.

And they're learning where their food comes from.
